Early into the first season of “The Jeffersons” in January, 1995, it became obvious we were working with an exceptional and wonderful cast. From Sherman Hemsley’s George Jefferson to Zara Cully’s Mother Jefferson, the casting was ideal and well suited to the series. Roxie Roker who played Helen Willis was most elegant in her bearing. Forgetting the fact that she was born in Miami and lived in Brooklyn and her father was an emigre from the Bahamas. Ocassionally, she would turn on a Bahamian accent instantly and the listener would be immediately transported.
In conversation with Roxie during a break, she revealed that her husband, Sy, was an NBC network news Producer, who was of Ukranian Jewish descent. This added gravitas to her series character, Helen, whose husband was white in the character of Tom Willis, as played by Franklin Cover. When Roxie talked about their 10 year old son, Len, she proudly said that he seemed to have an interest in music. Roxie was speaking lovingly of her son destined to be a future musical giant whose full name is Lenny Kravitz.
Lenny distinguished himself as a lead singer, backup vocalist, a multi-instrumentalist, music arranger and record producer. Little Lenny would eventually win the Grammy for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance four times in a row from 1999 – 2002. Oh, by the way, Lenny Kravitz has sold an estimated 38 million albums. Not bad for Roxie’s 10 year old son who had an interest in music.
